A coworker recently showed me an app he made in the spirit of Quantified Self and I thought it was really cool. I’m going to be trying to make something similar in order to learn some ReactJS. In the mean time, he also reminded me about Gyroscope. I started using it last week and so far I’ve found it to be very cool and beautiful.
My instincts had me nervous for a while about sharing a lot of my data publicly, but so far I can’t think of any real legitimate concerns. The main thing I thought could be concerning is location data, but I don’t collect that with Gyroscope so I’m not too worried about that for now. I recently finished reading Dr. Matthew Walker’s Why We Sleep. I liked the book, but it made me seriously concerned about the amount and quality of sleep I’ve been getting. As a result, I’ve been pushing myself to try to get more sleep. I’ve found that having the visualization in Gyroscope to be a good reminder and motivator.
One thing I’ve correlated so far with my amount of sleep is emotional reactivity. After a night where my sleep duration dropped relative to the previous several nights, I caught myself on the bus being more annoyed and judgemental about people relative to the previous days. I don’t have much data to draw a strong correlation yet, but I’m interested to see how things continue to play out in the future.
Another interesting thing that happened this morning is that I saw this graph this morning:
I got really excited to see my progress. It was also interesting to see my excitement carry over elsewhere as I was more excited than usual to go to the gym tomorrow, and I also found myself more excited to go to work tomorrow than I have been in the past several months.
